MIO Seminar - Charly Pierre de Marez, post-doctoral researcher University of Iceland - June 26, 2024

Charly Pierre de Marez, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Iceland, will give a seminar on June 26, 2024 at 10:00 am - Salle Egée, on .the following topic : Ocean dynamics around Iceland at the mesoscale and below.

Abstract : Water masses formed in the Arctic Ocean overflow into the North Atlantic at the bottom of the ocean, forming the so-called upper cell of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).
The pathway of the currents carrying these water masses is still under debate due to a lack of observations.
We first discuss the in details the pathway of these bottom currents in the specific area south of Iceland.
We second discuss the warming of these bottom water masses as a result of intense vertical mixing due to the mesoscale activity.
Projected increases in mesoscale eddy activity under a warming climate suggest continued bottom water warming.
These findings have major implication in the understanding of heat and carbon transport at depth in this area, which constitute an important response of the climate to anthropogenic forcing.

Charly de Marez completed a doctoral thesis at the Laboratoire d'Océanographie Physique et Spatiale under the supervision of Xavier Carton and Thomas Meunier during which he studied the dynamics of coherent meso- and submeso-scale structures in the Arabian Sea.
He then studied surface ocean turbulence as a post-doctoral researcher at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, as part of NASA's SWOT satellite launch. Charly is now a post-doctoral researcher in Reykjavik, at the University of Iceland, where he studies fine-scale processes around Iceland in order to better understand the movement of water masses, pollution, and algae in this region.

His current and future interest are for ocean dynamics at the mesoscale and below, the interaction between sea ice and oceanic currents, but also oceanic convection processes at high latitudes and in the Mediterranean Sea.

Charly is interested to discuss about these topics with members of the MIO working on it during his visit Wednesday 26th June, take contact with him !
