The SAM is a joint department of the MIO (Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography), which provides the scientific community with a pool of instrumentation (sea and air-sea), technical support for offshore, coastal and observation campaigns, and assistance with the technological development of scientific equipment and prototypes.

Equipment is certified to manufacturers' standards and recommendations, and a dedicated technical team is involved in training and research programs.

The SAM is the depository of the regional oceanographic park of the INSU Technical Division (CNRS).
